Travelling abroad legal requirements

When driving throughout Europe there are a number of legal requirements for items that must be carried within your vehicle

Don't go without taking:

• Spare set of car keys
• Fire extinguisher, first aid kit, tool kit, spare bulbs
• Warning triangle
• your registration document, driving licence and passport- check if you’ll need an International Driving Permit
• UK motor insurance certificate, Green Card (if issued)
• Breakdown policy and contact numbers
• Travel insurance documents
• Emergency helpline numbers

Whilst you’re away:

• Drive defensively and expect the unexpected – the local driving style may be different to that of the UK
• Don’t drive when you’re tired and take regular breaks on long journeys
• Always wear a seat belt and make sure other passengers do to
• Don’t drink and drive – the alcohol limit may be lower than in the UK and in some countries there is zero tolerance for drink driving
• Don't use your mobile whilst driving
• Don’t overload your vehicle and ensure you can see out of the back window
• If you’re involved in an accident, contact your insurer immediately and take photographs of damage to your vehicle

Driving your own car

• You should have a GB sticker clearly visible on the back of your car. You’ll also need headlamp converters if you’re driving on the right-hand side of the road. You will also require fire extinguisher, first aid kit, tool kit, spare bulbs and a warning triangle depending on Countries you plan to travel through.

France

Driving requirements for travelling in France:

You must hold a full UK valid driving licence –
Carry Valid Insurance certificate for the vehicle you are driving and proof of ownership of vehicle
Carry a letter of permission from the vehicle’s registered owner if borrowing or hiring.

Equipment to be carried in vehicle at all times in France:

Warning Triangle
Reflective jacket (which must be kept inside the vehicle not the boot)

All of the above you should be carried whilst travelling in France as failure to produce  any of these can result in a fine or vehicle being impounded.

Legal driving regulations in France

Children under the age of 10 years are not permitted to travel in the front of the vehicle.

Speeding is controlled by heavy on the spot fines and can also lead to impoundment/confiscation of vehicle.

Any form of In-car radar detectors are illegal whilst in France even if not in use if stopped carrying one of these devices the penalty is a fine and/or, confiscation of equipment and can also lead to impoundment/confiscation of vehicle.

To avoid fines full compliance is necessary examples below
90 euros per missing equipment item current charge
90 euro fine for failure to use hazard lights when stopped current charge
135 euro fine if children under the age of 10 are found to be riding in the front of the vehicle. current charge

Germany

Driving requirements for travelling in Germany:

You must hold a full UK valid driving licence –
Carry Valid Insurance certificate for the vehicle you are driving and proof of ownership of vehicle
Carry a letter of permission from the vehicle’s registered owner if borrowing or hiring.

All of the above you should be carried whilst travelling in Germany as failure to produce these documents can result in a fine or vehicle being impounded.

Spain

Driving requirements for travelling in Spain:

You must hold a full UK valid driving licence –
Carry Valid Insurance certificate for the vehicle you are driving and proof of ownership of vehicle
Carry a letter of permission from the vehicle’s registered owner if borrowing or hiring.

Equipment to be carried in vehicle at all times in Spain:

2 Red warning triangles to be placed in front and behind vehicle in the event of a breakdown or accident.
1 pair of spare spectacles (if required for driving)
Spare wheel
1 Full set of vehicle light bulbs together with tool required to change them
Reflective jackets must be worn by any members out of the vehicle whilst stopped for Breakdown or Accident whilst awaiting the emergency services
Failure of any of the above can result in heavy fines.

Drink Driving laws are very strict in Spain the limit is 0.05% and 0.0% for new drivers - Penalties are heavy fines, loss of driving license and imprisonment.

Seat belts should be worn by all passengers in front and back of vehicle – children under the age of 12 years are not allowed to travel in the front of the vehicle and small children must be in an approved child safety seat in the back seat.

Mobile phones are not to be used whilst driving or when pulled over by the roadside by law - ear pieces are prohibited - Only a totally hands free unit is permitted whilst using mobile telephone in the vehicle.

Italy

Driving requirements for travelling in Italy:

You must hold a full UK valid driving licence –
Carry Valid Insurance certificate for the vehicle you are driving and proof of ownership of vehicle
Carry a letter of permission from the vehicle’s registered owner if borrowing or hiring.

WARNING -  ZTL in black lettering on Yellow background denotes the historical centre in Italian cities - Private and hire vehicles are not permitted into these areas without an official pass.
If crossing into these zones your vehicle registration will be photographed and notice of fine or fines if crossing into historic areas more than once will be sent to your home address.

Head lights - Dipped head lights should be used during the day whilst driving on all motorways and major roads outside of the cities.
 
Mobile phones are not to be used whilst driving unless using headphones or a hands free with speaker unit.

Drink Driving laws are very strict in Italy the limit is 0.05% grams per litre

Reflective jackets - at least one reflective jacket must be inside the vehicle and worn at all times by any member out of the vehicle whilst stopped for any reason e.g. - Breakdown or Accident whilst awaiting the emergency services

Towing – If towing a caravan or trailer the reflective warning triangle must measure at least 20” (50cm) square

Minor traffic violations are now liable to on the spot fines of between 150 and 250 euros – so drive within the rules of the road to avoid fines and delays.

Austria

Driving requirements for travelling in Austria:

You must hold a full UK valid driving licence –
Carry Valid Insurance certificate for the vehicle you are driving and proof of ownership of vehicle
Carry a letter of permission from the vehicle’s registered owner if borrowing or hiring
Mobile phones are not to be used whilst driving unless using a hand’s free.

Drink Driving laws are very strict in Austria the legal limit is 50 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood (and/or 10 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood for beginners, coach and HGV drivers)

Reflective jackets - at least one reflective jacket must be inside the vehicle and worn at all times by any member out of the vehicle for any reason e.g. - Breakdown or Accident whilst awaiting the emergency services

Belgium

Driving requirements for travelling in Belgium:

You must hold a full UK valid driving licence –
Carry Valid Insurance certificate for the vehicle you are driving and proof of ownership of vehicle
Carry a letter of permission from the vehicle’s registered owner if borrowing or hiring.

Reflective jackets - at least one reflective jacket must be inside the vehicle and worn at all times by any member out of the vehicle for any reason e.g. - Breakdown or Accident whilst awaiting the emergency services

Holland

Driving requirements for travelling in Holland:

You must hold a full UK valid driving licence –
Carry Valid Insurance certificate for the vehicle you are driving and proof of ownership of vehicle
Carry a letter of permission from the vehicle’s registered owner if borrowing or hiring.
Identification

Head lights - Dipped head lights should be used after dark and in misty poor conditions.

Warning triangle must be carried and placed 30 metres from vehicle in the event of breakdown or accident

Seat belts – must be worn if fitted in vehicle. Children under 1.35m in height must sit in an approved car seat in the rear of the car.
